ucd-rsa-byobb-1

UCD’s Research Staff Association cordially invites you to participate in our first ever BYOBB event!

Researchers Bring Your Own Brown Bag
When: 27th of April, Wednesday, 4pm to 6pm
Where: First floor seminar room of the Charles Institute of Dermatology
At present UCD has around 300 post-docs, yet we are all spread across disciplines and dispersed in different campus buildings, offices, and labs. To bridge the gap and allow us some fun space for discussion, engagement, and outreach outside our disciplinary bubbles, the members of UCD RSA would like to invite you to present your work to other post-docs and reseach assistants.
The rules are as follows: Each post-doctoral researcher who signs up should present their work in 5 minutes. Timing will be strict. Turnover will be quick. Post-docs from each and any discipline are welcome to present. Please RSVP to UCD RSA if you are interested in presenting, and send us your discipline and topic, so we can make the outline.
Of course anyone who just wants to listen, learn, and meet other research staff in UCD are more then welcome!
Bring your own snacks. Coffee, cookies, and tea will be provided by RSA.
This is a non-competitive event, just an opportunity for you to share the coolest, most interesting aspect of your work!

UCD RSA Meeting: 12/03/2015, 12pm, L532, James Joyce Library

Next UCD Research Staff Association meeting is coming

12th of March, Thursday, 12-1pm

Room L532, 5th Floor

UCD James Joyce Library Building

UCD Research Staff Association needs YOU!

UCD’s Research Staff Association (UCDRSA) was formed in 2010 following the sudden introduction by UCD of the Research Careers Framework (RCF) which impacted severely on postdoctoral careers. Through negotiations between ourselves and UCD HR, Heads of Departments (HoDs), Principal Investigators (PIs) and other interested parties such as grant holders and government ministers we have achieved some significant changes to the RCF. We have managed to get postdoc 1 and 2 terms extended to 6 years total, with the possibility of becoming a research fellow after your postdoc contract. We have also helped with the appointment of a careers development officer (Naoimh O’Connor) solely to help with postdoctoral career development advice and support. We instigated the setting up of a standing committee (of which we are part) which reports directly to the UCD University Management Team (UMT) and is made up of HR, HoDs, and PIs. We represent research staff at committees.

We provide:

·Quarterly networking events together with UCD Research and Careers Development Office.

·Advice on employment rights and on who you can speak to if you have career or employment related concerns.

·A space where the voice of research staff members can be heard, and where we can talk to each other about common experiences and problems we share.

We are currently working on:

·Social and networking events for research staff members

·Events and lectures which raise awareness about the growing number and unique necessities of research staff – both postdocs and research assistants.

·UCD Postdoc orientation event tailored specifically for Postdocs.

·Improved training courses for postdocs.

·The creation of a senior research fellow post within the university.

·Removing the status of Trainee from postdoc contracts.

·Common rights for postdocs across the university such as:

  • Access to teaching hours for postdocs who would like to attain some.
  • Formal recognition as supervisor or co-supervisor of postgrads.
  • Formal recognition as the PI on grants that the postdocs write.

In order to continue our work in 2015, we are currently recruiting new members for our organising committee!

·This is your chance to shape the future direction of the UCDRSA which represents you in UCD.

·This is a way to make sure that your voice is heard, and that your needs are met.

·This is a space to speak, network, and socialise with colleagues from UCD across the disciplinary spectrum, whom you would not otherwise get the chance to meet.

If you feel you can contribute by becoming a committee member come and join us at our next committee meeting on the 12th of March, Thursday, 12pm L532, 5th Floor James Joyce Library Building.

If you can’t make it, please get in touch with us at rsa@ucd.ieand we will keep you posted about our activities and next meetings.

Budget 2015

Budget 2015 was announced this week and the sentient points are here courtesy of the Irish Times

Something of note for postdocs too is the targeted lifting of the ban on public sector employment, which has been in place since the recession began, beginning in 2015 which could mean more academic jobs being advertised.

This file attached below is from revenue’s own website and again summarises the budget details.

UCDRSA: Who we are and what we do for you

UCDRSA: Who are we and what do we do?

The UCD Research Staff Association (UCDRSA) was formed in 2010 following UCD’s sudden introduction of the Research Careers Framework (RCF) which was subsequently exploited as a shield to circumvent the legitimate obligation of UCD in issuing contracts of indefinite duration (CID) to postdocs who were otherwise eligible under the Protection of Fixed Term Worker Act.  In addition, the RCF had the direct consequence of impacting severely on postdoctoral careers. At that time UCD planned to classify all postdocs as trainees without a clear justification and maximally allowed two postdocs contracts of 2 years duration each after completing their PhD (PD1 and PD2). On completion of these, postdocs were compelled to either find their own independent funding or move on. However, no training or professional development were made available to the postdocs to aid this process.

We felt that it was extremely ambitious and unrealistic on the part of UCD to expect young postdocs at their early career stage to be successful in securing independent funding. UCDRSA has been instrumental in raising all these concerns that directly impact postdoc community within UCD. We continue to engage in dialogue with UCD Human Resources, Heads of Departments, Principal Investigators and other stakeholders including funding agencies and government and ministers, and have so far achieved positive results.

The achievements of UCDRSA:

  • The total term of PD 1 and PD 2 has been extended (from 4 yrs) to 6 years in total.
  • It is now possible to work as a Research Fellow after you complete the 6 yrs postdoc even without your own funding if you are: a) deemed essential to the grant; b) have a particular unique skill; or c) have your own funding.
  • A fully dedicated careers development officer (Naoimh O’Connor) has been appointed as the contact person for career development advice and support to all postdocs.
  • Postdoc have representation in a standing committee which report directly to the UCD University Management Team (UMT). This committee is made up of HR, Heads of Departments, and Principal Investigators.

We provide:

  • Quarterly networking events together with UCD Research and Careers Development Office.
  • Advice and guidance on employment rights.
  • Advice on who you can speak to if you’ve career or employment related concerns.

We are currently working on:

  • New UCD postdoc orientation event tailored for the postdoc.
  • A welcome document providing advice to new postdocs.
  • The creation of the position of Senior Research Fellow (SRF) post within the university.
  • Improved training courses for postdocs especially for postdocs who wish to exit.
  • Removing the status of Trainee from postdoc contracts.
  • Common rights for postdocs across the university such as:
    • Access to teaching hours for postdocs who would like to attain some.
    • Formal recognition as supervisor or co-supervisor of postgrads.
    • Formal recognition as the PI on grants that the postdocs write.

The important work carried out by UCDRSA continues, but to be successful we need YOUR help and input.

Labour Court Recommendation on Redundancy Payments

Hi Everyone. We wanted to bring to your attention a recent Labour Court recommendation on redundancy. A number of unions took a case against the Department of Education & Skills (DES) over the issue of redundancy entitlements and the Labour Court has made a recommendation which can be viewed here:

http://www.labourcourt.ie/en/Cases/2014/April/LCR20730.html

Briefly though:

As a result of inconclusive discussions on the matter the case was referred back to the Court. Having considered the position of both sides the Court recommends the following:-

Employees made redundant in the Education Sector who accept the two year ban on re-employment within the public sector should be entitled to benefit from the terms of the Agreement on Enhanced Redundancy Payments as laid down in the Agreement, i.e. three weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory redundancy payment.

  • Employees made redundant in the Education Sector who do not accept the two year ban on redeployment within the public sector should be paid two weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory redundancy.
